Book Review: Ruby Red

Now that I finished TORRENT, book #3 in my time travel series, I’m allowing myself to read other time travel books. And OH, I thought this book was SO fun. Here’s the summary from goodreads.com:

Gwyneth Shepherd’s sophisticated, beautiful cousin Charlotte has been prepared her entire life for traveling through time. But unexpectedly, it is Gwyneth, who in the middle of class takes a sudden spin to a different era!

Gwyneth must now unearth the mystery of why her mother would lie about her birth date to ward off suspicion about her ability, brush up on her history, and work with Gideon–the time traveler from a similarly gifted family that passes the gene through its male line, and whose presence becomes, in time, less insufferable and more essential. Together, Gwyneth and Gideon journey through time to discover who, in the 18th century and in contemporary London, they can trust.

My Two Cents

I’m amazed at the skills of the translator–you’d never know it was originally written in German. I loved the characters and the complex family dynamics, the friends and the main character’s special gift (that even she has not fully recognized). The only thing I thought was unbelievable was the romance…but I’m hoping that it’s just a set-up and will make more sense with book #2, SAPPHIRE BLUE. Tried to preorder, but it’s not yet available. But you better believe I’m on it as soon as it is!

Mama Bear Warnings *minor spoiler below*

Just a tiny bit of mild swearing and the main character sees ghosts. In the world of paranormal fiction, that’s a pretty mild thing, but some readers might take issue with that.
